Formed in 1999 in Amityville, NY, Taking Back Sunday modeled their interpretation of melodic hardcore after bands like Lifetime, Endpoint, and Sunny Day Real Estate, as well as guitarist Ed Reyes' emo outfit the Movielife. After the release of a five-song demo and a year's worth of touring (including shows with At the Drive-In and Alkaline Trio), Taking Back Sunday signed to Victory Records and entered New Jersey's Big Blue Meanie Recording Studios alongside producer Sal Villanueva and engineer Tim Gilles. The result, Tell All Your Friends, layered Adam Lazzara's emotional vocals and the dual-guitar assault of Reyes and John Nolan, fashioning a classic hardcore sound with pop songwriting components. The debut album was released in March 2002 and is the only official album to display the founding lineup.

The group spent the rest of that year and much of 2003 touring, but when Nolan and bassist Shaun Cooper left the band (which was rounded out by drummer Mark O'Connell), Taking Back Sunday's future was left in doubt. However, guitarist/vocalist Fred Mascherino (ex-Breaking Pangea) and bassist Matt Rubano (ex-Schleigho) filled out the lineup in time for the band's fall 2003 tour and subsequent recording sessions. The sophomore effort, Where You Want to Be, arrived in summer 2004 and debuted at number three on Billboard's Top 200, establishing Taking Back Sunday as a forerunner in the wave of commercial emo bands. It also introduced the vocal interplay of Lazzara and Mascherino, a combination that would briefly become one of the band's sonic calling cards. TBS toured steadily behind the album, headlining a sold-out North American tour and hitting the usual Warped Tour stops as well.

In the wake of Where You Want to Be's success, Taking Back Sunday signed with Warner Bros. in June 2005 and co-headlined several shows with Jimmy Eat World. Ever the hard workers, they returned to the studio in August to commence work on their third full-length album. Produced by Eric Valentine (Third Eye Blind, Queens of the Stone Age), Louder Now debuted at number two upon its release in April 2006. The album was a darker, more aggressive effort that tapped into the band's live energy, which was further displayed on the concert CD/DVD package Louder Now: Part Two. Despite the band's mounting profile, however, Fred Mascherino exited the lineup in October 2007 and launched a solo career. Several months later, former Facing New York member Matt Fazzi was announced as Mascherino's replacement, and the revised band spent the bulk of 2008 writing new material and playing sporadic shows. New Again, the first album to feature Fazzi's contributions, was readied for release in summer 2009, prefaced by a lengthy American tour during the spring months.

Angels And Airwaves (Love Update,,)

Angels and Airwaves' 2006 debut We Don't Need to Whisper signaled the beginning of a concept that not only continues, but flourishes with the release of the band's sophomore full-length, I-Empire. That's because the San Diego-based rock group, fronted by Tom DeLonge, has always considered both We Don't Need to Whisper and I-Empire two halves of its double-album concept.

While the band's debut addressed infinite possibility in the human experience, I-Empire furthers the topic, referencing the idea that the empire that one builds exists within oneself. "It's a way of looking at the world, as the world is yours," DeLonge says.

As for I-Empire's musical foundation, DeLonge notes that it's "a hybrid of everything about alternative music that I grew up listening to, like punk rock music and new wave. I am really excited for people to hear it."

The members of Angels and Airwaves created their own experience earlier this year, spending six months recording their latest release at DeLonge's studio in San Diego, with drummer Atom Willard, guitarist David Kennedy and new bassist Matt Wachter (formerly of 30 Seconds To Mars).
"Matt's a punk rock kid at heart," DeLonge says. "He grew up on the Descendents, Fugazi and Gorilla Biscuits all the bands that we grew up listening to."

Much like Angels and Airwaves' debut, I-Empire also delivers a diverse collection of songs, from expansive compositions to straight-ahead pop-oriented rockers, of which DeLonge notes, "sounds more like 'old Tom DeLonge,' but with these Angels and Airwaves choruses."

The album's first single, "Everything's Magic," immediately finds the tight-knit rhythm section of Willard and Wachter propelling the upbeat verses with an infectious drive, buttressed by open, melodic guitar riffing, and guided by DeLonge's grasping vocal delivery at the forefront. Just sit back and hold on tight, sings Tom DeLonge in the song, offering sound advice for the entire album.

An additional highlight from I-Empire is the straight-shooting "Sirens," of which DeLonge notes was loosely based around the folklore of mermaids calling ships to their destruction with their songs. "It's such a beautiful idea," he says. "So I wrote this song about a murderer, and the murderer is breaking into a house to take out a woman that he's obsessed with. But the idea was more about how the song is beautifully romantic, but it's an upbeat song. It sounds like an old Police song, which I think is the best way to describe it."

And thats just a sample of the evolution of the Angels and Airwaves sound that now continues with I-Empire. "I think it's going to catch [people] off guard as to what this band can do, as far as the diversity and how we do it," DeLonge says. "I'm just so passionate about it."

At the Grammy Awards on February 8, 2009, DeLonge climbed on-stage with Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus to announce plans for a blink-182 reunion. The band toured that summer and spent significant time in the recording studio, where sessions for a new blink-182 album kept DeLonge busy. He found enough free time to record a third album with Angels & Airwaves, however, and the finished product -- simply titled Love -- was released free-of-charge on Valentine's Day, 2010.

Paramore

Although their spunky blend of emo-pop and anthemic rock eventually made them stars on both sides of the Atlantic, Paramore began humbly enough in Franklin, TN, where lead singer Hayley Williams met brothers Josh and Zac Farro after moving to town from Mississippi. The two Farros had a band that the 13 year-old singer was asked to join, and guitarist Jason Bynum and bassist Jeremy Davis soon climbed aboard to complete Paramore's lineup. Local hangouts and a school talent show helped the young bandmembers hone their chops before graduating to higher-level gigs at area rock clubs.

The quintet's pop-influenced melodies and earnest charisma -- not to mention Williams' powerhouse vocals -- eventually caught the attention of Florida's Fueled by Ramen label, which signed the band in April 2005. Working with producers James Wisner and Mike Green, Paramore recorded their full-length debut, All We Know Is Falling, and released it in late July 2005. In addition to a performance at New Jersey's Bamboozle Festival and multiple dates on the Warped Tour circuit, Paramore played shows with such bands as Simple Plan and Straylight Run. Hunter Lamb replaced Bynum on guitar in December 2005, and the band spent the following summer on Warped Tour once again, cementing their relationship with fans who had caught the previous summer's shows. Lamb parted ways with the group in early 2007 to get married, and Paramore continued onward as a quartet.

The following summer saw the release of the band's sophomore album, Riot!, which was recorded alongside producer David Bendeth and issued by the band's new label, Atlantic Records. Buoyed by the popular singles "Misery Business," "crushcrushcrush," and "That's What You Get," Riot! turned Paramore into industry darlings, going platinum within its first 13 months and earning the band a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. With replacement guitarist Taylor York onboard, the group toured exhaustively in support of the record, even landing a two-month jaunt across the continental U.S. with Jimmy Eat World. Meanwhile, Paramore found time to contribute two songs to the Twilight soundtrack, including the Top 40 single "Decode." A live album entitled The Final Riot! was released several weeks after the Twilight soundtrack, capturing the band's energy as a live act and concluding the touring cycle in support of Riot!.

Paramore publically struggled with fame throughout 2008. Of particular note was the attention lavished upon Hayley Williams, whom many media outlets deemed to be the leader of the group. Rumors of a breakup began to circulate, yet Paramore's lineup remained intact, and the band retreated to a California studio in 2009 to work on a third album. Following a popular summer tour with No Doubt, the group issued Brand New Eyes, a pensive record that featured some of Paramore's strongest songwriting to date. The album debuted at number two with sales of 175,000 copies, besting Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, and went gold by the end of the year.
